There are some cases where a solicitor should be able to give a reliable estimate, or even offer a fixed fee, eg a squatters case, an ordinary possession case or proceedings to wind up a company. However, these are in the minority. The cost of most cases depends on many things, including the amount of resistance from the other party. However, it ought to be possible to give estimates on the basis of what is known at the time, even if those estimates have to be revised later.
A solution to the problem of unpredictable costs is conditional fee agreements.
